Alors que débute aujourd’hui la nouvelle édition de Vertical Blue, je vous propose de revenir en arrière sur les tout début de la compétitions avant de regarder d’un peu plus près quels sont les apnéistes français en compétition cette année.

As the new edition of Vertical Blue begins today, I suggest you take a look back at the very beginning of the competition before taking a closer look at which French freedivers are competing this year.

Vertical Blue

Vertical Blue est une compétition d’apnée créée le 1er avril 2008 à l’initiative William Trubridge, champion néozélandais d’apnée et détenteur de record du monde. La date avait été choisie en mémoire de Jacques Mayol qui aurait fêté ses 81 ans à la même date. Aujourd’hui après 15 ans d’existence, le Vertical Blue a toujours lieu au Dean’s Blue Hole aux Bahamas mais la date a quelque peu changé. Cette année la compétition début aujourd’hui le 20 juillet 2023. Vertical Blue fait partie des compétitions jugées AIDA International (ou CMAS en 2021). Elle est reconnue au niveau international car les conditions de plongée en apnée sont exceptionnelles. Elles ont permis l’établissement de nombreux records nationaux et mondiaux. Les athlètes viennent du monde entier. Dès la première édition, William Trubridge avait établit un nouveau record du monde à -108 mètres en apnée en immersion libre (Free immersion apnea – FIM) . Aujourd’hui il en détient pas moins de 18 records en tout.

Vertical Blue is a freediving competition created on April 1, 2008 at the initiative of William Trubridge, New Zealand freediving champion and world record holder. The date was chosen in memory of Jacques Mayol who would have celebrated his 81st birthday on the same date. Today after 15 years of existence, the Vertical Blue still takes place at Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas but the date has changed somewhat. This year the competition begins today July 20, 2023. Vertical Blue is one of the competitions judged AIDA International (or CMAS in 2021). It is internationally recognized because the freediving conditions are exceptional. They have allowed the establishment of numerous national and world records. Athletes come from all over the world. From the first edition, William Trubridge had established a new world record at -108 meters in Free immersion apnea (FIM). Today he holds no less than 18 records in all.

La délégation française – The French delegation

La France a souvent été représentée. Parmi les athlètes de la première édition, il y avait Guillaume Néry et Christian Maldamé. A Vertical Blue 2008, 23 records nationaux, dont 5 records du monde ont été enregistré dans les 3 disciplines représentées : poids constant sans palmes (Constant Weight Without Fins – CNF), poids constant (Constant Weight – CWT) et poids constant sans palmes (Constant Weight Without Fins – CNF). Aujourd’hui encore la compétition ne compte qu’un accident très grave qui a eu lieu le 17 novembre 2013, lors duquel l’apnéiste américain Nicholas Mevoli est décédé d’une embolie pulmonaire fatale après avoir tenté d’établir un record.

France was often represented. Among the athletes of the first edition, there were Guillaume Néry and Christian Maldamé. At Vertical Blue 2008, 23 national records, including 5 world records were recorded in the 3 disciplines represented: constant weight without fins (Constant Weight Without Fins – CNF), constant weight (Constant Weight – CWT) and constant weight without fins ( Constant Weight Without Fins – CNF). Even today the competition has only one very serious accident which took place on November 17, 2013, during which the American freediver Nicholas Mevoli died of a fatal pulmonary embolism after trying to set a record.

Dean’s Blue Hole

Dean’s Blue Hole est le trou bleu le plus profond du monde et la deuxième plus grande chambre sous-marine. Il est entouré sur 3 côtés par un amphithéâtre de roche naturelle et sur le quatrième côté par un lagon turquoise et une plage de sable blanc. La houle et le vent n’atteignent pas l’intérieur du trou et la visibilité est généralement comprise entre 10 et 30 mètres (30 et 100 pieds). En surface, le Blue Hole mesure 25 x 35 m (80 x 120 pieds), mais s’ouvre après 20 m (60 pieds) dans une caverne d’au moins 100 m (330 pieds) de diamètre – nous n’avons toujours pas trouvé les bords ! On ne sait toujours pas comment le trou s’est formé exactement, car il est presque deux fois plus profond que n’importe lequel des autres cents dans les Caraïbes qui se sont formés lorsque des chambres calcaires se sont effondrées par le haut. Une hypothèse est qu’une grotte beaucoup plus profonde a ralenti et s’est déplacée vers le haut à mesure que son plafond s’érodait.
Ces conditions exceptionnelles font de ce site un lieu privilégié pour la pratique de l’apnée.

Dean’s Blue Hole is the deepest blue hole in the world and the second largest underwater chamber. It is surrounded on 3 sides by a natural rock amphitheater and on the fourth side by a turquoise lagoon and a white sand beach. The swell and wind do not reach the inside of the hole and the visibility is generally between 10 and 30 meters (30 and 100 feet). On the surface, the Blue Hole measures 25 x 35 m (80 x 120 ft), but opens after 20 m (60 ft) into a cavern at least 100 m (330 ft) in diameter – we still don’t have not found the edges! Exactly how the hole formed remains unclear, as it is almost twice as deep as any of the other hundred in the Caribbean that formed when limestone chambers collapsed from above. One hypothesis is that a much deeper cave slowed and moved upward as its ceiling eroded. These exceptional conditions make this site a privileged place for the practice of apnea.

Vertical Blue 2023

Cette année, la compétition Vertical Blue aura lieu du jeudi 20 au 30 juillet. La France sera représentée par Alice Modolo, Arnaud Jérald, et Eddy Laffin.

Lors de la précédente édition du Vertical Blue, Arnaud Jérald avait battu son propre record du monde avec une plongée historique à -120 mètres.

Alice Modolo avait décroché quand à elle un nouveau record du monde AIDA en poid costant bi-palmes (Constant Weight Bi-Fins – CWTB) avec une plongée à -96 mètres, ce qui a fait progresser le record de 2 mètres.

Le Haut-Savoyard Eddy Laffin participera pour la première fois à Vertical Blue. Il a récemment remporté son troisième titre de champion de France en apnée eau libre le 1^er  juillet 2023 à Villefranche-sur-Mer ce qui le met dans de bonnes dispositions pour Vertical Blue.

This year, the Vertical Blue competition will take place from Thursday 20th to 30th July. France will be represented by Alice Modolo, Arnaud Jérald, and Eddy Laffin.

During the previous edition of Vertical Blue, Arnaud Jérald broke his own world record with a historic dive to -120 meters.

Alice Modolo had won a new AIDA world record in Constant Weight Bi-Fins (CWTB) with a dive to -96 meters, which advanced the record by 2 meters.

The Haut-Savoyard Eddy Laffin will participate for the first time in Vertical Blue. He recently won his third title of French champion in open water apnea on July 1, 2023 in Villefranche-sur-Mer, which puts him in good shape for Vertical Blue.
