In every sport, there is a holy grail that the best female competitors seek to achieve. In deep freediving, the mythical bar is set at -100 meters. Even today, few of them have reached the 100 meters depth. Discover those who have marked the history of the discipline by winning this famous Grail.

Pour apprécier l’exploit des athlètes qui atteignent cette profondeur et remonte à la surface, il faut les imaginer parcourir les 100 mètres de longueur d’un terrain de football et revenir. Cela correspond aussi à monter et descendre les 30 étages d’un immeuble. Ce qu’il faut aussi comprendre, c’est qu’à 100 mètres de profondeur, la pression est très importante puisqu’elle atteint les 11 bars. Une apnéiste qui plonge à la profondeur de 100 mètres doit donc faire face à des conditions extrêmes dû à la profondeur comme la perte de lumière et de chaleur mais aussi la pression qui est exercée par l’eau sur son corps. Atteindre la profondeur de 100 mètres sous l’eau est donc un challenge aussi bien physique que mental. Cela requière une forme physique exceptionnelle et avoir un mental à toutes épreuves. Parmi celles qui ont réussi ce challenge, certaines nous ont quitté mais cela n’entache pas l’exploit qu’elles ont accompli.

To appreciate the feat of athletes who reach this depth and come back to the surface, you have to imagine them walking the 100 meters in length of a football field and coming back. It also corresponds to going up and down the 30 floors of a building. What should also be understood is that at a depth of 100 meters, the pressure is very high since it reaches 11 bars. A freediver who dives to a depth of 100 meters must therefore face extreme conditions due to the depth such as the loss of light and heat but also the pressure which is exerted by the water on his body. Angela Bandini – Italy (-107 NLT / 1989)

Angela Bandini est une apnéiste italienne qui a été la première femme a atteindre -107 mètres en apnée. Elle a atteint cette profondeur en No Limit en 1989. C’est aussi la première personne a avoir battu les précédents records de profondeur établit par Jacques Mayol. Le 3 octobre 1989, toujours sur l’île d’Elbe, elle atteint une profondeur de -107 m, il obtient le record du monde absolu CMAS, battant les -105 m réalisés par Jacques Mayol en 1983.

Angela Bandini is an Italian freediver who was the first woman to reach -107 meters in freediving. She reached this depth in no limit in 1989. She is also the first person to have broken the previous depth records set by Jacques Mayol. On October 3, 1989, still on the island of Elba, it reached a depth of -107 m, he obtained the absolute CMAS world record, beating the -105 m achieved by Jacques Mayol in 1983.

Débora Andollo – Cuba (-115 NLT / 2000)

La Cubaine Débora Andollo a établi 16 records du monde dans les quatre modalités d’immersion en apnée. Elle a même établi un record du monde valable pour les deux sexes pour l’immersion en apnée. A -115 mètres en apnée no limits en juillet 2000 à Parghelia en Italie.

Cuban Debora Andollo set 16 world records in the four freediving modalities. She even set a world record valid for both sexes for freediving. At -115 meters in apnea no limits in July 2000 in Parghelia in Italy.

Audrey Mestre – France (-130 NLT / 2001)

Audrey Mestre était une biologiste marine mais aussi une plongeuse en apnée française qui à partir de 1996, s’est passionné pour la plongée No Limit et, atteignit des profondeurs records. En 2000, au large de la côte du fort Lauderdale, elle battit le record du monde féminin de plongée en apnée avec une profondeur de -125 mètres. Un an plus tard, en 2001, elle battait son propre record avec une plongée en apnée à -130 mètres (qui est son dernier record officiellement reconnu).

Le 4 octobre 2002, avec une équipe d’apnéistes et sous la direction de son mari, elle effectua une plongée en apnée au large de Bayahibe en République Dominicaine et atteignit la profondeur de -166 mètres. Son histoire a pris fin brutalement et tristement puisqu’elle perdra la vie 8 jours plus tard, en tentant une plongée à -171 mètres.
Audrey Mestre est donc la première française à avoir atteint les -100 mètres. Elle reste encore à ce jour la française ayant plongée le plus profond en apnée.

Audrey Mestre was a marine biologist but also a French freediver who, from 1996, was passionate about no-limit freediving and, reached record depths. In 2000, off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, she broke the women’s freediving world record with a depth of -125 meters. A year later, in 2001, she broke her own record with a freediving at -130 meters (which is his last officially recognized record).

On October 4, 2002, with a team of freedivers and under the direction of her husband, she did a dive off Bayahibe in the Dominican Republic and reached the depth of -166 meters. Her story ended abruptly and sadly as she lost her life 8 days later while attempting a dive to -171 meters.

Tanya Streeter – USA (-160 NLT / 2002) – (-122 VWT / 2003)

Tanya Streeter est une championne d’apnée américano-britannique originaire des Îles Caïmans. Elle débute la pratique de l’apnée à l’age de 25 ans puis très rapidement commence à battre les records déjà établis. Entre 1998 et 2005, Tanya remporte 10 records du monde dont un qu’elle détient encore aujourd’hui, le No Limits à -160m.
Fin 2003, elle avait battu le record absolu en Poids Variable (VWT) avec une plongée à -122 mètres qu’elle conservera plus d’un an, jusqu’à la descente de Carlos Coste (- 135 mètres) à Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela, le 27 octobre 2004, et presque sept ans comme record féminin, jusqu’à la plongée de Natalia Molchanova à -125 m en juin 2010 à Kalamata en Grèce.

Tanya Streeter is an American-British Freediving Champion originally from the Cayman Islands. She began freediving at the age of 25 and then very quickly began to break the records already established. Natalia Molchanova était une championne d’apnée russe. Elle est encore aujourd’hui la détentrice de plusieurs records du monde. C’est l’apnéiste féminine la plus décorée au monde, détenant 41 records du monde. Elle a remporter pas moins de 23 médailles d’or au cours de sa longue carrière. Elle atteindra pour la première fois les -101 mètres CWT le 25 Septembre 2009 à Sharm en Egypte puis elle atteindra les -125 mètres VWT le 16 June 2010 à Kalamata en Grèce avant de dépasser son propre record à -127 mètres VWT le 6 Juin 2012 à Sharm en Egypte.

Natalia Molchanova was a Russian freediving champion. She is still today the holder of several world records. She is the most decorated female freediver in the world, holding 41 world records. She has won no less than 23 gold medals during her long career. She will reach for the first time -101m CWT on September 25, 2009 in Sharm, Egypt then she will reach -125m VWT on June 16, 2010 in Kalamata, Greece before breaking her own record at -127 meters VWT on June 6, 2012 in Sharm in Egypt.

Annelie Pompe – Sweden (-126 / 2010)

Annelie Pompe est l’athlète suédoise des extrèmes puisqu’en plus d’être une apnéiste des grands fonds, elle est aussi une alpiniste qui a conquis la plus haute montagne du monde, l’Everest.
Le 5 octobre 2010, elle a battu le record du monde d’apnée à poids variable, avec une plongée à 126 mètres VWT à Sharm en Egypte.

Nanja Van Den Broek – Netherlands (- 130 VWT / 2015)

Nanja Van Den Broek est une apnéiste hollandaise débute en 2001 et établi très rapidement ses deux premiers records nationaux à l’occasion de sa première compétition en piscine. C’est aussi la première apnéiste Néerlandaise (homme et femme confondus) à avoir effectué une plongée en apnée à -100 mètres No Limits le 31 mai 2014. Le 18 octobre 2015, elle établit un nouveau record du monde dans la discipline Poids Variable avec une plongée en apnée en poids variable à -130 mètres VWT. Elle a été la première à battre le record de Natalia Molchanova dans cette discipline. Ce record est aussi son 30e record national.

Nanja Van Den Broek is a Dutch freediver, started in 2001 and quickly established her first two national records during her first swimming pool competition. She is also the first Dutch freediver (man and woman combined) to have freedived at -100 meters No Limits on May 31, 2014. On October 18, 2015, she set a new world record in the Variable Weight discipline with a snorkeling in variable weight at -130 meters VWT. She was the first to break Natalia Molchanova’s record in this discipline. This record is also his 30th national record.

Hanako Hirose – Japan (-103 CWT / 2017)

Hanako Hirose est une apnéiste japonnaise qui remporte son premier record du monde avec une plongée en apnée en poids constant à -103 mètres CWT le dernier jour de la compétition internationale d’apnée Vertical Blue aux Bahamas le 10 mai 2017. Hanako a été la première femme à atteindre les -100 mètres en compétition, après Natalia Molchanova.
Hanako effectue une autre plongée à une profondeur de -106 mètres CWT établissant un nouveau record du monde lors de Vertical Blue en 2018.

Hanako Hirose is a Japanese freediver who won her first world record with constant weight freediving at -103 meters CWT on the last day of the Vertical Blue international freediving competition in the Bahamas on May 10, 2017. Hanako was the first woman to reach -100 meters in competition, after Natalia Molchanova. Hanako makes another dive to a depth of -106 meters CWT setting a new world record at Vertical Blue in 2018.

Sayuri Kinoshita – Japan (- 100 CWT / 2018)

Sayuri Kinoshita était une apnéiste japonaise, l’une des principales compétitrices, ayant des records mondiaux dans plusieurs disciplines en profondeur. Au Vertical Blue 2018, elle a fait sa première plongée en apnée en poids constant (CWT) plongeant à -100 mètres, ce qui fait d’elle la 6ème femme féminine à avoir atteindre cette profondeur dans cette discipline en compétition. Elle perdit tragiquement la vie dans un accident domestique en 2019.

Sayuri Kinoshita was a Japanese freediver, one of the main competitors having world records in several depth disciplines. At Vertical Blue 2018, she made her first freedive constant weight (CWT) at -100 m, which made her one of the 6th female freediver to reach this depth in competition.. She tragically lost her life in a domestic accident in 2019.

Tomoka Fukuda – Japan (-100 CWT / 2018)

Tomoka Fukuda est une apnéiste japonaise. Elle a débuté l’apnée en 2010 et n’a pas cessé de progresser. En 2012, elle remporte sa première médaille d’or au championnat du monde par équipe AIDA à Nice, en France. Le 7 mai 2018, elle atteint la profondeur mythique de -100 mètres en poids constant aux Iles Cayman.

Tomoka Fukuda is a Japanese freediver. She started freediving in 2010 and has continued to improve. In 2012, she won her first gold medal at the AIDA World Team Championship in Nice, France. On May 7, 2018, she reached the mythical depth of -100 meters in constant weight in the Cayman Islands.

Agata Bogusz – Poland (-101 CWT / 2019)

Agata Bogusz est une apnéiste polonaise qui a établi des records polonais dans quatre des huit compétitions d’apnée reconnues par l’Association Internationale pour le Développement de l’Apnée (AIDA). Elle a longtemps détenu les records dans les trois catégories de profondeur. Le 13 septembre 2019, elle établit un nouveau record à -101 mètres CWT à l’occasion d’une compétition à Kalamata en Grèce.

Agata Bogusz is a Polish freediver who set Polish records in four of the eight freediving competitions recognized by the International Association for the Development of Apnea (AIDA). She has long held the records in all three depth categories. On September 13, 2019, she set a new record at -101 meters CWT during a competition in Kalamata, Greece.

Alessia Zecchini – Italy (-113 CWT / 2019) – (-101 FIM / 2021)

Misuzu Okamoto – Japan (-100 CWT / 2021)

Alice Modolo est une apnéiste française qui a déjà 20 records de France à son actif. Elle débute l’apnée en 2017 alors qu’elle a 23 ans, sa discipline fétiche devient très rapidement l’apnée dynamique (DYN). Elle découvre l’apnée en poids constant en 2009. De 2008 à 2013, elle enchaîne les performances, les titres et les records de France. Elle atteint les -100 mètres en poids constant à la monopalme le 24 juillet 2021 lors du Vertical Blue aux Bahamas.

Alice Modolo is a French freediver who has 20 records from France to his credit. She starts freediving in 2017 when she was 23 years old, her favourit discipline becomes very quickly the dynamic freediving (DYN). She discovers the full weight freediving in 2009. From 2008 to 2013, she enchained the performances, titles and records of France. She reached the -100 meters by constant weight with a monopalm on July 24, 2021 at the Blue Vertical in the Bahamas.

Marianna Gillespie – France (-102 CWT / 2021)

Marianna Gillespie est une apnéiste de compétition française d’origine russe. Depuis le début de sa carrière sportive, Marianna accumule les titres et les exploits. A 31 ans, elle devient la première française à dépasser la barre des 100 mèters de profondeur, le samedi 28 août 2021 à Kalamata en Grèce, établissant un nouveau record de France en poids constant monopalme à – 102 mètres CWT. Elle bat au passage le record de France féminin établi par Alice Modolo en juillet 2021.

Marianna Gillespie is a French competition freediver of Russian origin. Since the beginning of her sports career, Marianna accumulates titles and exploits. At 31, she became the first French to go beyond the depth 100 metres bar on Saturday 28 August 2021 in Kalamata in Greece, establishing a new record of France by constant weight monopalme at -102 meters CWT. She beats the female record of France established by Alice Modolo in July 2021.

Pour ceux qui se battent avec les acronymes – For those whe stuggles with acronyms

CWT = Constant weight with fins. Diving as deep as possible with the use of fins or a monofin.
CNF = Constant weight without fins. Diving as deep as possible without fins.
FIM = Free immersion. Diving as deep as possible by pulling down and up the rope.
VWT = Variable weight apnea. Using a sled for descent, pulling back up along a line or swimming up with or without fins.
NLT = No-limits apnea. Using a sled for descent, and an inflatable bag for ascent, or any other method or technique.
